Someone is sending me some photos via Email from Dropbox. I have no experience using this App. Since I do not have Dropbox installed, do I just drag and drop from their email onto my desktop? Or how will this work?

Unfortunately, they only got it half-right (Surprised? Nah, me neither).

If you’d like to know how to set up a proper drop box, then read on!

First of all and obviously, you need to create a folder. So go ahead and do that.

Next (at the server) right-click the folder, select Properties and in the dialog that appears navigate to the Security tab.

Click Edit.

1. Ensure that your administrators have Full control over the folder, this could be the group SERVERAdministrators or DOMAINDomain Admins.

2. Add the groups that you wish to have Read/Write access to everything in the folder. Assign them Modify permissions (including Read, List, Write etc). e.g. Teachers

Apply, and OK to return to the initial dialog shown above.

Click Advanced to edit advanced security permissions. Now, the fun stuff..

From the new dialog that appears, click the Change Permissions button.

Deselect the Include inheritable permissions from this object’s parent option.
When prompted, you want to Add the previously inherited permissions.

Now, Remove all the users and groups except for the Administrators, Read/Write users (points 1 and 2 above), the CREATOR OWNER and the SYSTEM groups. If your ‘Drop’ users are listed, remove them.

Next Edit (or Add) the group CREATOR OWNER – this is a built in account that allows you to assign NTFS permissions to (obviously) the creator or owner of things.
Ensure the permissions are as follows..
Apply to: Subfolder and Files only
Permissions: Full control
Click OK.

Next Add the group for the users you want to ‘Drop’ files in the folder. e.g. Students
Apply to: This folder only
Permissions: List folder, Create files, Create folders, Write attributes, Write extended attributes, Read permissions
Click OK.

Again, Add the same group for the users you want to ‘Drop’ files in the folder.
Apply to: Subfolders and files only
Permissions: Create files, Create folders, Write attributes, Write extended attributes
Click OK.

So, what did we do? Well the basic permissions pretty much speak for themselves but for the advanced permissions the explanation is thus..

The first rule allows users to read only the files they create. This stops Finder throwing an error when you drop files there because OS X wants to create thumbnails and gather metadata when it sees new files.

The second rule allows users to list the files in the drop box. This solves a bug with Finder where for some reason files copied to the folder seem to immediately dissapear (!) – don’t ask – it’s strange behaviour and I couldn’t find the cause specifically, I think it may have something to do with spotlight/.dsStore thumbnail shenanigans.

The third rule allows users to drop files in the folder, but not delete them, nor read files created by other users. This gives the distinction of a drop box as opposed to standard write permissions.

I have received an MS Word 2010 document containing drop boxes. In windows I can see the drop boxes and their content in Word for Mac I only see the box outline and top loine, there is no drop box functionality.


The person who put the spreadsheet together provided me with this info - any ideas how I can get the drop box functionality to work???


'We used Microsoft Word 2010. We inserted the drop down boxes, etc. using the Developer tab. In the Developer tab, the functions we inserted are called Legacy Forms and ActiveX Controls. We inserted all the functions using Word, not Excel. The drop down option is called Drop-Down List Content Control.'
